I experience a similar problem with GNU compilers. Code that seems to
work fine with Intel 9.0 and sunf95 (SUN Studio Express v3) compilers,
crashes randomly(?) with the latest gfortran (svn).

Did you try a different compiler to see whether the problem persists?
